Maps Contemporary Art Space
Character Study
(March 18 - 30, 2008)

For two weeks in March, Maps Contemporary Art Space will organize three consecutive, four day solo-exhibitions, as prelude (and preview) to Maps’ upcoming exhibition season. Giving over the Front Room to the three local artists exhibiting at B.J. Vogt’s Bellville space in the Spring, the Front Room will serve as a conceptual lab for the artists themselves, who will still be shaping their respective projects. Artist Kathy Cannistra, taking on the role of her alter-ego, Kathy Cooper, will transform the space into a media center for the activities of the super-hero Glitterus and her nemesis Nimbus. Chris Vogt will preview his BFA Exhibition, presenting works on paper and sculpture reminiscent of phone and p.c. skins, MySpace page layouts, and other visual identities of contemporary tech culture. Courtney Henson’s performance-based project centers on “twin personas” that will continue to evolve into and through her exhibition at Maps.

General support for the Contemporary's exhibitions program is generously provided by the Whitaker Foundation; William E. Weiss Foundation; Regional Arts Commission; Arts and Education Council; Missouri Arts Council, a state agency; Nancy Reynolds and Dwyer Brown; and members of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.
