3.6.2008: Film Screening: Before the Music Dies (95 minutes)

Narrated by Academy Award® Winner Forest Whitaker, Before the Music Dies is an unsettling and inspiring look at today’s popular music industry featuring interviews and performances by Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis and a wide variety of others. Filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen traveled the country, hoping to understand why mainstream music seems so packaged and repetitive, and whether corporations really had the power to silence musical innovation. The answers they found on this journey are what make Before the Music Dies both riveting and exhilarating.

3.18.2008: Front Room
MAPS Contemporary Art Space, March 18-30, 2008

For two weeks in March, Maps Contemporary Art will organize three consecutive three-to-four day solo-exhibitions, as prelude (and preview) to Maps’s upcoming exhibition season. Giving over the Front Room to the three local artists exhibiting at B.J. Vogt’s Bellville space in the Spring, Maps’s project will serve as a conceptual lab for the artists themselves, who will still be shaping their respective projects. Artist Kathy Cannistra, taking on the role of her alter-egos, Kathy Cooper and the super-villain Nimbus, will transform the space into an evil agency/secret headquarters. Chris Vogt will preview his BFA Exhibition, presenting works on paper and sculpture reminiscent of phone and p.c. skins, MySpace page layouts, and other visual identities of contemporary tech culture. Courtney Henson’s performance-based project will include contributing objects, drawings, and photographs.

3.27.2008: Film Screening: A, (anonymous)
6:00 pm, Free admission

Directed by Daniel Bowers and shot in St. Louis, this mockumentary explores the world of support groups and 12 step programs. Gavin Tartowski has been called a quack, a cult-leader, and a barista who sees himself as a guru. Looking for a support group to help him with his compulsion to wear extremely tight pants, Gavin was turned away from 12-step programs like AA, NA, and GA. "Why all the labels?" Gavin asks. "Why not put all problems under one umbrella? That is why I created A. I want to help people no matter what their challenges are." Members begin to work through their own inner-demons and start to see the value in their lives. Although Tartowski's methods are less than orthodox, his ability to heal is indisputable.
